Review: Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

Goodreads Description:

I died on a Thursday-killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul. The good news? He didn’t get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school… Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent “recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend. But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling with her own life….

Whuy did I read this?

I think that this was one of mymost anticipated reads of this year. After reading If I Die, I literally needed this book. If I Die left off with some serious cliffhangers and so many questions that needed to be answered. When this came on my Kindle I think I actually drooled a little bit. No lie. My fiance was looking at me like I was crazy but I didn’t care.

What did I think?

Rachel Vincent’s books just keep getting better and better with each one. The whole Soul Screamers series is a personal favorite of mine and when I don’t think she can outdo herself, she blows my mind. Again and again and again.

This is no exception. Before I Wake seriously starts off right where we ended in If I Die. There is no time to stop and breathe.

After the horrible ordeal that happened in If I Die (with K’s death I mean), Kaylee has to adjust with her life….and afterlife. Not so easy when you can’t stay visible.

Kaylee, to me, is such a strong girl. No joke. How would you handle almost being raped by a man (in your own bed), stab him and then get killed yourself? Seriously….Give the girl a hand or a pat on the back. She handles herself really well and I commend Kaylee on keeping herself together….. sort of.

Throughout this book, I was in such an emotion wreck-like state. Vincent truly knows how to torture her characters but all the while making them so human and you can identify with each one.

And let me tell you….ALL of these characters that you’ve come to gorw and love and hate will be tortured in some way. Not physically persay….but emotionally and mentally.

Of course throughout the book there are likes and dislikes. I have waaaaay more likes of course and maybe one dislike. The only dislike that bothered me, was the fact that Kaylee does so much and no one gives her gratitude. Really. I think Tod is the only one who truly understands her. (No worries, I’ll get to Tod in a minute šŸ™‚ ) But Nash was irritating a bit. I understand partly where he comes from, but he holds some kind of grudge against Kaylee in regards to a situation that was out of her control. Everytime he brings it up, Kaylee sort of….slips away more. It bugged me. Everyone else doesn’t give Kaylee her dues. She’s saved practically everyone of her friends/family and they don’t say “thank you”.

Now that I’m off my soapbox…. we can get to the swoony part that was my most favorite…..

Just typing the name, and my mind and heart sighs. I can hear thousands of girsl everywhere squeal and swoon. And it’s well deserved.

If you thought he was dreamy in the earlier books, this one tops them all so far. Tod is the epitomy of the perfect man for Kaylee. He’s the only one who can truly understand how she feels and empathizes with her. He takes care of her. If he does nothing else but take care of her the way she deserves, that is enough really.

Throughout, he is so incredibly sweet and so unbelievably dreamy I had to take a breath whenever he said something. Serisously. You hard core Tod fans? This is so the book for you. He’s everywhere and you. Will. Love. It.

The book has so many twists and turns, you never know what’s coming. Just when you think you have an idea, Vincent turns you into a completely different place.

And, yes…..there is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end that will make you want to go “WTF?!” because I totally did that. *shakes head* Vinent does it to me every time.

Man I loved this book. So comepletely awesome. I cannot WAIT to see the final installment. This is one of my most favorite and treasured series and the last book will be heartbreaking I know.

But I still cannot wait.

Favorite Quotes (of course they are from Tod.):

“You are so beautiful…” he whispered against the corner of my lips, when that kiss finally ended. My eyes opened, and I started to deny it, but he pulled away just far enough that he could look into my eyes. “No. You are. You are selfless on the inside and beautiful on the outside, and I am the luckiest man who has ever walked this earth, alive or dead.”

Tod sank to his knees next to the tub and put one hand on my bare back. “You’re not lost, Kaylee. You can’t ever be lost, because I’ll always know where you are. And if I’m not there with you, I’m on my way, and nothing standing between us will be standing for very long.”
